By the same artist as WA1899.CDEF.C507 and painted in the same year. The source is an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi after a design by Raphael [see illustration]. Marcantonio had access to many of Raphael's drawings from about 1510 and established a flourishing business producing engravings from them, which he continued after Raphael's death in 1520. Through the engravings of Marcantonio and his associates, Raphael's designs became the dominant stylistic influence on istoriato maiolica, especially in the painter's home town Urbino, during the 1520s and 1530s. In this design, Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues (along with Fortitude, Justice and Prudence), is depicted holding, not as might be assumed at first sight, a Renaissance precursor of the hamburger, but a bridle, symbol of self-restraint.
